Emerton’s dream of playing in the Premiership was finally realised in July 2003 when he joined Blackburn Rovers for a fee of £2.2million from Feyenoord.

The Australian international had been linked with Newcastle United for the previous 12 months, but in the end he moved to Ewood Park as Aston Villa also chased his signature.

The midfielder, who signed a three-year contract, said: ‘I have always made it known I wanted to play in the Premier League. Feyenoord was just a stepping stone for me.
