Good at holding the ball up and willing to take defenders on, Davies started his career with Chesterfield and burst onto the scene with some stirring displays as Chesterfield amazingly reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 1997.
The Spireites went out to Middlesbrough – and had a perfectly good equaliser disallowed.
His performances that season earned him a move to Southampton for £750,000, and he was a revelation in his first spell on the south coast. He scored nine goals in 20 Premiership stars and the pundits were purring.
