A Liverpool-born midfielder who came through the youth system of his home-town team, but the coaching staff didn’t feel he had what it takes.

Bolton Wanderers snapped him up, and he made his bow at the tender age of 17.

That debut came in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Charlton Athletic and he has come on to be an important member of the Trotters’ first team.

His first ever goal came in December 2000 as he netted in a 4-1 thrashing of Crewe Alexandra at the Reebok Stadium.
