Stubbs returned to Everton in January 2006 after a brief sojourn with troubled Sunderland.

The veteran defender joined Sunderland in August 2005 on a one-year deal after being released by Everton.

The central defender had just helped the Toffees, the club he supported as a boy, win a place in the Champions League following their incredible fourth-place finish. But the two parties could not agree on a deal and Stubbs departed.
