Andrew Johnson returned to the Premiership in the summer of 2006 after a year of trying to help Crystal Palace win an immediate promotion back into the top flight.
But after the Eagles failed in their bid to go up it was a mere formality that a player who was on standby for England’s World Cup squad would move on.
The striker had enjoyed a hugely impressive 2004/05 with Palace in the Premiership and after their relegation he handed in a transfer request. Manager Iain Dowie persuaded him to stay, and he was also boosted by England coach Sven Goran Eriksson who claimed the decision would not harm his international chances.
