Howard joined Manchester United as the latest ‘replacement for Peter Schmeichel’ in the summer of 2003 and has since gone on loan to Merseyside club Everton in a bid to get regular first team football in 2006/07.

The American goalkeeper had a hugely promising start to his career in the Premiership but after a drop in form after the turn of the year he has struggled to impress since.

The signing of Edwin van der Sar, and the previous preference of Roy Carroll, demonstrated his troubles at Old Trafford. Even with Dutch stopper Van der Sar nearing the end of his career, there are few who still believe that Howard is the natural successor.
