Crouch’s career took off in 2005. At the start of the year the tall striker’s career in the Premiership was in doubt; by the summer he had signed for the Champions of Europe.
The turnaround began in mid-December 2004 when new Saints boss Harry Redknapp showed faith in his ability to cause a nuisance by throwing him back into the side for the battle against relegation from the Premiership.
After netting in the home draw with Middlesbrough, Crouch went on to bag a total of 16 goals, 12 in the Premiership. That form made him one of the most deadly strikers in the top flight – plus his awkward style also helped to create goals for others.
