Vassell left Aston Villa in July 2005 after an inconsistent spell, bound for Manchester City in a £2million deal.
The striker progressed to become an England international under Sven Goran Eriksson, but a series of injuries and his failure to become prolific in front of goal eventually saw him leave Villa Park.
There had long been speculation over his future with the Midlands club, especially when it came to discussing terms over a new contract, but it was still surprising when Villa chose to cash in.
