Distin joined Newcastle United on a season long loan from Paris St Germain in September 2001, with a view to a permanent move. He followed the same path as countryman Laurent Robert, who had joined a few weeks earlier.
Before joining PSG, Distin plied his trade with FC Gueugnon, winning the French League Cup in 2000.
Newcastle manager Bobby Robson said: ‘He’s left-footed, which is one of the big reasons why I am signing him. I just like left-footers on the left side of the pitch and he gives us that option.
