Middlesbrough signed Pogatetz in a £1.8million deal from Bayer Leverkusen in July 2005. But their joy over the capture was short-lived.
Within hour of the Austria international putting pen to paper, he was banned for 24 weeks by the Russian Football Association.
Pogatetz, who was also tracked by Fulham, had been on loan at Spartak Moscow prior to the Boro deal. Pogatetz was punished for a tackle in his final game for the club which left Shinnik Yaroslavl’s Yaroslav Kharitonskiy with a double leg fracture.
The midfielder was signed by Aston Villa for a fee of £4.5million from Coventry City in the summer of 1999 amid high controversy.
Sky Blues’ chairman Bryan Richardson accused Villa of making an illegal approach for the player who had destroyed them in a 1999 Premiership game at Villa Park.
