Woodgate returned to English football in August 2006 when signing for hometown club Middlesbrough on loan for the season.
The England international’s two-year spell with Spanish giants Real Madrid had been dogged by injury, meaning he had only played 12 games for the team but it was generally accepted their leaky defence looked far more secure when he was available.
Though his fitness improved back in England with Middlesbrough he still had his fair share of knocks.
