One of the best keepers in the Premiership, Schwarzer started his career with Marconi, where Christian Vieri was a team mate, winning a league title, before joining Dynamo Dresden and then Kaiserslautern.

He signed for Bradford City in November 1996, and is regarded as one of the best keepers the Bantams ever had despite joining Middlesbrough just four months later.

He is a commanding figure and an excellent shot-stopper who cost Boro £1.5million. His Boro debut came in a 2-0 League Cup win at Stockport County, and his Premiership bow ten days later in a 3-1 loss at Sheffield Wednesday.
