TDowning is an England Under-18 international who made the breakthrough into the Middlesbrough first team towards the end of the 2001/02 season.

He made his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Ipswich Town from the start – almost netting a late leveller – and was named Man of the Match. Then featured in Boro’s final two games of the season against Chelsea and Leeds United.

Downing, a left-sided midfielder, is very highly rated by the Boro coaching staff and possesses a deadly cross.
