O’Neil is a young midfielder who is a product of the Pompey youth set up.
He made the breakthrough into the first team in January 2000 against Barnsley as a raw 16-year-old, coming on as a last minute substitute so had little influence.
But former boss Tony Pulis gave him the chance to impress by giving him his first start in August 2000 at Gillingham but a broken foot then hampered his progress.
