A big-money signing who cost £700,000 when arriving from his former – and only – club, York City, Murty was unlucky with injuries when he first signed for the Royals in 1998.
He was tranformed from a winger into a sturdy right-back and has risen to captain the side as they try to stay in the Premiership.
On 30 April 2006, Murty scored only his second goal in 280 appearances when Reading played Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the 2005-06 season. It ensured that Reading reached 106 points, a record for the second tier of English football.
