Yet another of the fine young stars to have fallen off the Crewe Alexandra production line, this striker was hungry to succeed with his hometown club and his desire eventually earned him a Premiership move with Sheffield United in 2006.

He made his debut for Crewe in a 1-0 home win over Norwich City in March 2000, and bagged his first goal on the last day of the 1999/2000 season at Barnsley.

Hulse bagged 11 goals in 2000/01 as he reputation as a quality striker began to grow, and he followed that up with another 12 in 2001/02. The scoring rate was all the more impressive as Crewe were a struggling side, relegated in the latter season.
