Jenas left Newcastle United on transfer deadline day in August 2005 after his status at the Tyneside club had plummeted dramatically as the year progressed.

At the beginning of 2005 the midfielder had become Newcastle’s youngest ever captain, but he then fell out of favour with manager Graeme Souness and it became clear the young midfield talent wanted to move on.

The England international cited the ‘goldfish bowl’ effect of playing for a club like Newcastle United for driving him away.
