Mahon was one of several players to take a voluntary pay cut in Watford’s post-Vialli era, having signed for the club from Brentford in 2002 for £150,000.
Under Aidy Boothroyd, Mahon blossomed and was given the club captaincy. His play has continued to improve and his leadership and combative nature were a key feature in Watford’s promotion in 2005/06.
Mahon started with Wolves as a trainee, although he didn’t manage to secure a permanent deal and was picked up by Hereford United in 1996. He made 83 appearances for the Bulls and played in every league game in 1997/98.
