With a father who was head of the Watford Academy and a brother also a trainee at the club, Smith’s footballing path was clear for all to see.

Having begun playing Sunday league football for Comets Sports club, Smith earned himself an Academy place as a talented striker.

He broke into the first team in 1997 and went on to become an integral part of Watford’s playoff winning side of 1998/99, despite only netting twice.
