Bowyer returned to West Ham United in the summer of 2006 after a turbulent spell with Newcastle United which, just for a change, saw him battle with ill-discipline culminating in an on-field punch-up with teammate Kieron Dyer.

The one-time England international rejoined the Hammers for a second spell hoping for happier times than in his first spell at the club he supported as a boy – as they were relegated in 2003.

The midfielder began his career elsewhere in London at Charlton Athletic before joining Leeds United for a then British record fee for a teenager of an initial £2.6million, building to £3million over time.
