When Kirkland joined Liverpool from Coventry in the summer of 2001 he was seen as a certain challenger for the number one jersey with England.
Five years on, a succession of injuries and a dip in form limited him to just 45 appearances in the first team and various spells on loan in a bid to play more games.
Now he has signed a full time contract at Wigan after impressing during a season long loan deal that the club turned permament in October 2006.
